The Truck Cartel: What Does the Scania Ruling Mean?
On February 1, 2024, the European Court of Justice confirmed the ruling against Scania in the European truck cartel case.
The Cartel
Between 1997 and 2011, leading truck manufacturers coordinated prices and eliminated competition. The result: artificially inflated prices for medium and heavy commercial vehicles.
The Ruling
Scania must pay a fine of approximately €880 million and is liable for damages caused by the cartel. This opens the door for transport companies to claim compensation.
Your Opportunity
If you purchased, leased, or acquired trucks through hire purchase during this period, you may be able to claim compensation – regardless of company size.
Who Is Eligible?
Check yourself if you might be affected
In principle, all companies that meet the following criteria can claim compensation:
Time Period
Purchase, lease, or hire purchase of medium or heavy trucks between 1997 and 2014
Acquisition Type
The vehicles were purchased, leased, or financed through hire purchase
Manufacturer
Trucks from brands Scania, MAN, Daimler/Mercedes-Benz, Volvo/Renault, DAF, or Iveco (depending on the situation, other vehicles may also be relevant)
Location
The company is based in the European Economic Area (EEA)
If you had trucks from these manufacturers in your fleet between 1997 and 2014, it's worth checking for potential compensation claims in many cases.
